Jess Stevenson: A Lacrosse Journey of Passion and Leadership
Early Years and Collegiate Success:
Born in September 1989, Jess Stevenson embarked on a remarkable journey in the world of lacrosse, leaving an indelible mark on the sport. From 1989 to 1993, he showcased his athletic prowess as a student-athlete at Virginia Wesleyan University, earning the distinction of a four-year starter and two-time captain. His dedication and skills were further recognized in 1993 when he was named an Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Conference midfielder and participated in the prestigious North South Senior All-Star game.
Transition to Coaching and Community Engagement:
Following his illustrious playing career, Jess Stevenson transitioned seamlessly into coaching. From September 1993 to 1995, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan University under the guidance of Kyle Hannan, contributing his expertise to multiple institutions, including Salisbury, Hobart, Colorado College, Goucher, Mercer, and Wingate, before returning to Goucher.
Entrepreneurial Ventures:
In May 1994, Jess Stevenson founded Summer Lacrosse Inc., owning and operating the lacrosse summer league for an impressive seven years. This endeavor showcased his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to fostering lacrosse communities.
University Coaching and Aspirations in Professional Lacrosse:
From September 1995 to December 1996, Jess Stevenson took on the role of assistant lacrosse coach at Widener University under Chris Wakely. Simultaneously, he pursued a professional career, trying out for the NLL Philadelphia Wings in the fall of 1995 and again in 1996.
Leadership in High School Lacrosse:
In 2004, Jess Stevenson assumed the role of Head Coach at Norfolk Collegiate, showcasing his leadership on the sidelines. His impact continued as he organized the West Beach Tigers for HRlax from Spring 2009 to 2016.
Founding 757 Select Lacrosse and Administrative Roles:
In Spring 2014, Jess Stevenson became a founding member of 757 Select Lacrosse, serving on the board of directors while coaching their high school teams in 2018 and 2019. Simultaneously, he held the position of President of HRlax from Fall 2013 to 2018, contributing significantly to the growth and development of lacrosse in the region.
Legacy at Princess Anne High School:
From Fall 2014 to the fall of 2022, Jess Stevenson served as the Head Coach of Princess Anne High School, leaving an indelible legacy. Under his guidance, the program flourished, operating a full fall season and expanding to include a JV program in the spring of 2017. His commitment to player development extended beyond the field, offering strength and conditioning programs through CHKD.
Education:
Jess Stevenson’s educational journey includes time at Valley Forge Military Academy in 1898, earning his undergraduate degree from Virginia Wesleyan University in 1993. He pursued a master’s program in education at Widener University, although he did not graduate.
